Ethical AI. Ensuring Responsible Implementation in Your Business

Why should we keep in mind the role of ethics in the process of planning and implementing AI within a company?

Stanisław Lem claimed that “technology creates opportunities for choice where fatalism, chance or Providence previously acted in human life. The consequences of this situation are not only positive. Along with the opportunities, human responsibility and the need to make difficult decisions from which we were once exempt also grows. Moreover, our norms do not evolve as quickly as the changes taking place as a result of the development of technology, which may lead to the so-called axiological implosion (i.e. the collapse of the value system) when the existing norms and principles social coexistence will be significantly disturbed.”

In the era of dynamic development of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing application in various sectors of the economy, the issue of ethics will become an increasingly important and greater challenge for enterprises. The implementation of AI in a company requires not only advanced technology, but also a responsible approach to ethical issues.

1. Fundamental principles of AI ethics

The first step to responsible AI implementation is understanding what AI ethics is. AI ethics focuses on ensuring that AI systems are designed, implemented and managed in a way that is consistent with ethical and legal values. This includes topics such as:

  • Transparency – users should understand, at least to a basic extent, the assumptions upon which the artificial intelligence operates,
  • Fairness – AI should not discriminate against or favor specific groups,
  • Safety – AI must be safe for users and the environment,
  • Privacy – user data must be protected,
  • Responsibility – who is responsible for the results of artificial intelligence?

2. Developing a policy for the ethical implementation of artificial intelligence

A key element of responsible AI implementation is the creation of clear ethical principles in the company. They should comply with applicable laws, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union, and take into account the company’s specific values and needs. The policy should include:

  • Goals and values - determining what values the company wants to promote through the use of AI,
  • Scope of application – indication in which areas and scope of artificial intelligence will be used,
  • Ethical principles – guidelines for the design, implementation and management of AI,
  • Processes – procedures regarding monitoring, auditing, and reporting in connection with the use of AI,
  • Training – training programs for employees on the ethics of using artificial intelligence.

3. Managing projects using AI tools

Implementing AI tools requires proper project management to ensure that ethics are taken into account at every stage.

Here are a few key steps to consider:

  • Team of experts – appointing a team of AI ethics experts who will supervise the projects,
  • Risk assessment – conducting an ethical risk assessment at the beginning of each project,
  • Monitoring and auditing – regular monitoring and auditing of artificial intelligence systems for compliance with the company’s ethical policy,
  • Feedback and iteration – gathering feedback from users and stakeholders and making necessary changes.

4. Taking care of educating employees about artificial intelligence

Educating employees and stakeholders is crucial for the responsible implementation of AI.

In this regard, the company should ensure:

  • Training – organize regular AI ethics training for employees,
  • Communication – clearly communicate the ethical policy and its importance to all stakeholders,
  • Transparency – be transparent about the use of artificial intelligence in the company and its impact on users.

5. Implementing AI in the company in compliance with applicable regulations

A company’s decision-makers must be aware of applicable AI laws and ensure compliance with them. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • GDPR – compliance with personal data protection regulations,
  • Digital Services Regulation (DSA) – compliance with online platform liability regulations,
  • EU Artificial Intelligence Act –
  • Industry regulations – compliance with specific regulations for a given industry, e.g. in the financial sector.

6. Philosophy of continuous improvement in the use of AI tools

Responsible implementation of AI requires continuous improvement and adaptation to changing requirements. The company should pay attention to:

  • Trend monitoring – follow the latest trends and regulations in the field of AI,
  • Feedback from stakeholders – regularly collect opinions from users and stakeholders,
  • Innovation – invest in research and development to ensure that artificial intelligence is used safely and ethically.

Summary

Responsible implementation of AI in a company requires a comprehensive approach that includes, among others, responsible project management, education and continuous improvement. Owners and managers of large enterprises must be aware of the challenges associated with this technology and actively work to ensure that AI-based tools are implemented in an ethical and responsible manner.
